American citizen trapped on U.S. base in Kuwait by local police #kuwait

At least 100 American citizens have been trapped for months on two U.S. bases inside Kuwait after local police unjustly issued warrants for their arrest, a U.S. defense contractor told FoxNews.com.

dsc00010

Most of the Americans were working as Arabic translators for Global Linguist Solutions, which ended a lucrative deal with its sponsoring Kuwaiti subcontractor, Al Shora International General Trading & Contracting and signed on with another company. Sources told FoxNews.com Al Shora’s managing director is the sister-in-law of the Kuwaiti prime minister.

When the contract ended Feb. 17, Al Shora refused to transfer the employees’ visas to the new Kuwaiti subcontractor and falsely accused the Americans of being “runaways and absconders,” according to Charles Tolleson, president of Global Linguist Solutions. His company has barred workers from leaving the bases since May 31 to protect them from arrest and imprisonment.

“We don’t see any hope. We’re dealing with a corrupt company in Kuwait that has fabricated charges against us.”

“My biggest concern is the safety and security of my employees in Kuwait,” he said.

One of the employees, who contacted FoxNews.com Tuesday morning from Camp Buehring, said, “If we leave the base, we could be arrested by the Kuwaiti authorities, jailed or deported.”

“We cannot see the doctor even for an emergency,” said the woman, who asked that her name not be used. “Everybody here is under stress because a lot of us here need to go home. Our families are worried about us. We need to see our kids… We don’t see any hope. We’re dealing with a corrupt company in Kuwait that has fabricated charges against us.”

She said the Al Shora’s managing director “cancelled all of our visas here, so we became illegal.”

Camp Buehring is in the Kuwaiti desert, about 25 miles south of the Iraqi border. Other employees of Global Linguistics are similarly stuck at Camp Arifjan, another U.S. Army base inside Kuwait.

Al Shora is demanding $22 million from Global Linguistics in order to transfer the employees’ visas to the new company, Kuwaiti Resources House, sources said. Under Kuwaiti law, foreigners cannot work in the country unless they are under the sponsorship of a private Kuwaiti company.

After his company re-bid its contract several months ago and opted to chose the new Kuwaiti company, “Al Shora basically embarked on a campaign to destroy my company,” Tolleson said.

“There’s no contract dispute. I don’t even have a contract with them anymore,” he said of Al Shora. “If a sponsor is no longer a sponsor, they are required to simply transfer [the visas] to the new sponsor. This happens all the time. They won’t do that, and that violates the terms of their former contract.”

A representative from the Kuwaiti prime minister’s office said he was not aware of the situation.

“This is the first time I heard about this,” the representative, who declined to give his name, told FoxNews.com. “This kind of behavior has never happened.”

He had no comment when asked if the Al Shora’s managing director was related to Kuwaiti Prime Minister Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah

Tolleson said that when he approached the U.S. military about the situation, “I was told this is my problem.”

The office for the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait referred all inquiries on the matter to the U.S. State Department.

“The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait is aware of the commercial dispute involving a Department of Defense contractor and a local Kuwaiti company,” Beth Gosselin, as a State Department spokeswoman, told FoxNews.com. “That dispute has had an impact on a number of private U.S. citizens working in Kuwait.

“The protection of U.S. citizens overseas is one of our highest priorities,” Gosselin added. “The U.S. Embassy is working with the private U.S. citizens and is providing them with appropriate consular assistance. The Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and is encouraging an immediate resolution to this difficult issue.”

Video – Kuwait hangs two Egyptian men for murder and rape

Kuwait hanged two Egyptian men on Tuesday, one for murder and the other for abduction and rape, state news agency KUNA reported, in the second set of executions in the Gulf Arab state this year.

Ahmad al-Beili was sentenced to death for the premeditated murder of two people and Hajjaj al-Saeedi was found guilty of raping five children, KUNA said, adding that 29 people remain on Kuwait’s death row.

In April, Kuwait hanged three men who had been convicted of murder in the first executions since 2007.

Human Rights Watch, which campaigns against the death penalty, had urged Kuwait on Monday to halt the executions.

“This new round of executions indicates that Kuwait is moving in exactly the wrong direction regarding the death penalty,” Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at the rights group, said in a statement.

Kuwait orders 2000 MW worth of renewable energy #kuwait

Kuwait is set to spend USD 100 billion on the nation’s domestic energy sector over the next 5 years – and for the first time, some of that investment is earmarked for renewable energy.

Via Arabiangazzete . com
by John Brian.

Phase I of the country’s first renewable energy project is already underway and it will be in the form of a 70 MW ‘hybrid power plant’ with PV-solar, thermal solar, and small wind power, set to come online by Q3 of 2016, in Shagaya, Kuwait – near its border with Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

  • Phase I – 70 MW.
  • Phase II – 930 MW.
  • Phase III – 1000 MW.

Once the renewable energy plant is fully operational in 2030, the 2000 MW 3-part project will save Kuwait 12.5 million barrels of oil (BOe) per year — and power 100,000 Kuwaiti homes.

Saving 12.5 million barrels (BOe) per year will allow Kuwait to export that same amount of oil at the going rate. (12.5 million barrels of crude oil, is about equal to one fully loaded supertanker)

Oil prices have been hovering around the USD 80. – 100. mark recently, but this will certainly rise and some energy experts see oil rising as high as USD 250. per barrel, mid-century.

For demonstration purposes only, if that one supertanker load of ‘saved oil’ is priced near today’s USD 90. per barrel ($90. x 12.5 million barrels per year) it means Kuwait will rake in an extra USD 1.12 billion, per year, every year, due to this renewable energy project.

If the oil price shoots up as expected, the government will see even greater benefits. By the time oil hits USD 180. per barrel, this 3-Phase project will be complete — allowing the Kuwaiti government to take in USD 2.25 billion, per year, every year, due to this renewable energy project.

Separate from all of the foregoing, is the additional income that could be garnered from those ‘saved’ 12.5 million barrels per year — IF Kuwait added some value to that crude oil by refining it into valuable products before exporting it, such as gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, plastics and synthetic rubber — instead of merely exporting it as raw crude oil.

At that point, the relatively small amount of 12.5 million barrels per year could become worth much more than crude oil sold for USD 1 or 2 billion per year. Instead, when sold as fuels or plastics, it becomes many billions of dollars contributing directly to the national GDP of Kuwait.

To extrapolate this further, Kuwait’s national power grid uses 14,000 MW at peak load. Out of their yearly production, Kuwait uses 126 million BOe (barrels-of-oil-equivalent) per year, to power their domestic electricity grid.

Based on USD 90. per barrel, with 126 million barrels (BOe) saved:

If Kuwait switched completely to renewable energy, and instead, exported all the crude oil and gas it burns to produce domestic electricity, national GDP could increase by USD 11.3 billion.

Based on USD 180. per barrel, with 126 million barrels (BOe) saved:

If Kuwait switched completely to renewable energy, and instead, exported all the crude oil and gas it burns to produce domestic electricity, national GDP could increase by USD 22.6 billion.

Based on value-added products made from crude oil, with 126 million barrels (BOe) saved:

If Kuwait switched completely to renewable energy, and instead, refined all the oil and gas it burns to produce domestic electricity, national GDP could increase by USD 56.7 billion, or more.

Only now, with the recent combination of high crude oil prices and the dramatic fall in the cost of renewable energy has it made economic sense for OPEC nations to consider the switch to renewable energy.

Simply put, OPEC nations can make more money by exporting their oil – instead of burning it to produce electricity for domestic consumption.

Adding value to the ‘saved’ crude prior to export, means that OPEC nations have the opportunity to make their money many times over, when compared to simply exporting raw crude product.

Embracing this new vision can work miracles for GCC economies, which are blessed with plentiful sunshine and wind resources, and already have the technology to refine their crude oil, thereby adding value to the raw resource while creating thousands of jobs for the region’s chronically under-employed youth.

Cleaner air for GCC citizens, billions more dollars via value-added exports and a lower unemployment rate among region’s youth. Now that’s something to celebrate!

Interview of Maryam Osama Omar by KUWAIT UPTO DATE #kuwait

Designed by Usman Choudhry

Level 1 certified cricket coach by Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Captain of women team in Kuwait, Maryam Osama Omar. Welcome Maryam to KUWAIT UPTO DATE.

Tell me something about you/background?
I am a Palestinian girl, born and brought up in Kuwait. I can summarize who I am in 3 words; determined, hardworking and adventurous. People who know me best say that I’m daring, trouble maker and fun to be around. Ever since I was a kid I had dreams of becoming a famous sports person and I still live up to achieve this dream. In my family, due to my hyperness and naughtiness, I’m considered to be the brother to my 3 sisters. I love travelling, sports, music, art, meeting new cultures, traditions and living life to fullest.

Date of birth: 8th March 1993
Age: 20
Sports: Cricket, Basketball, martial arts, swimming, football, volleyball.
Education: Bachelor’s of Civil and structural engineering at Australian College of Kuwait (ACK).
Sports participated in: Cricket (National Team) Basketball, football and volley (College team).
Years in current sport: 3 years

What got you started ?
Summer of 2010 (my last year of high school), A circular was distributed inviting the International School of Pakistan girls (ISCP) to join cricket talent-hunt which was organized by Kuwait cricket. I wasn’t interested because I had no background of the game. My sports teacher Mrs. Shaista Tahir insisted that I should go and see. Being an Athlete, I was quite positive about learning something new so I decided to give it a try. However, I had never anticipated for this game to be the best part of my life.

What are the major challenges that you have encountered so far in your career?
Being an engineering student, I had to focus so much on studies. My father didn’t like the idea of having anything that could interrupt my education so I had to promise my dad that I would do my best in giving him what he wants ( good grades)  and in that way I would also get what I want i.e. (sports). The major challenge was the time management. With all the things that I wish to do, a day could only hold 24 hours so I had to compromise few of my activities.

Would you like to share with us the keys of your success being captain of team?
Well, I’d like to put like this (PHD)
Passion, hard work and dedication!

What would be your ultimate achievement in life?
To be part of a test playing country (Australia) and to get the chance to participate in a world cup event, if that is to happen it would be a dream come true.

Do you always been very confident on ground?
No. Initially I wasn’t very confident. However, soon later with the help of few of my finest coaches (Coach Tariq Shah and Tahir Khan) who did not just teach me how to bowl or hold a bat but more than just cricket they taught me how to trust my ability, skills and to enjoy the game. I’ve learned to believe in myself and in what I love.

What is your biggest challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
One of the biggest challenges that I had gone through was to understand the game. It was at the beginning of my career. Although I’m a quick learner, it took me time to understand the rules of the game. Cricket is not just a physical game of quickness. It requires sharpness of thinking, tactics and techniques. I’ve managed to overcome this challenge by immersing myself into cricket whenever possible. Watching matches and noting down the points that I don’t understand so that I could refer back to my coaches for answers is something that I still do.

Being a cricket player, how your diet is different than other girls?
As a sports girl, I find it very important to have a balanced diet; it’s a key factor for a healthy mind.
Beside a normal healthy diet, my diet contains NO fast food but instead a great amount of vegetables and fruits, milk as a daily intake. Playing long hour matches need loads of energy and that’s only possible if we are physically fit. In order to avoid cramps, fatigue or muscle pulls. Water is one critical nutrient for athletes, shouldn’t be taken lightly. Proper water intake is necessary during matches to avoid dehydration.

What 1-2 things do you believe differentiates you from your fellows in team?
My fitness level and dedication towards cricket.

Do you have any recommended resources to share with your fans regarding cricket (website, face book page, books…etc)?

For information regarding international tournaments and updates the below links should be fine.
 http://www.asiancricket.org/

What was the best advice you were ever given?
The best training advise:
Initially, I was frustrated when I wasn’t able to be deliver in all three aspects of the game (Batting, bowling and fielding) That’s when Tahir Khan’s (Coach) advise came in handy, he guided me along by saying “Greatness needs time and hard work” so then I realized that I had to focus on each step separately before being able to mastering all three.

The best match Advise:
“Fortunate favors the brave” by Tariq shah (Coach).

Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by? Where do you draw your inspiration?
“Rules are meant to be broken” *giggles*
There is not a specific saying or motto but I live my life drawing motivation and inspiration from the people around me. I believe that there is always something that you can learn from every person that you come across.

What has been your worst experience so far in cricket?
Losing the semi final was one of the worst experiences.
ACC U-19 Women’s Championship (2012), Kuwait performed extremely well in all the pool matches but unfortunately we weren’t able to secure a spot in the finals. If we got that win it would have been Kuwait women’s biggest achievement. However, we managed to get the 4th position which is still the best that we have reached. And by this Kuwait is the first gulf country to reach the semi.

What are your other activities in life except cricket and study?
Besides cricket and engineering, I’m devoted towards sports and art. Whenever I find a free slot in my busy schedule I either practice my other activates; martial arts, basketball and swimming or practice playing my guitar, I do sketch too but whenever in the moodJ.
I always have something to do; But Cricket is on the top of my list.

How do you manage stress on pitch?
Being an opener, there is always a big responsibility of setting a firm platform on which the rest of the team could build on. But I’m extremely lucky to have one of the best young talented openers by my side Varshini Suresh. When we go in to bat, there’s always this huge trust and confidence on each other and this helps me release most of the built in stress. We both make the best duo; we always start the inning by achieving small targets which we set for ourselves as we bat our way through.

Who one motivate you a lot at home?
At the beginning of my career, my mother was the only person who motivated me. As much as it was hard for me to adjust to my new life style being a national cricketer, it was equally hard for her to cover up for my regular missing spot at home due practice, travelling on tours and studies. I spend most of my day at college and during the night I practice cricket and other sports too. Even on weekends when I’m supposed to be chilling with my family, I’ll be going early morning to practice. My dad hates my repetitive absence but now I’m glad he understands how much it’s important to me. Now I’m glad to say I have a full force support system at home and I love it.

Do you see bright future as cricket player?
I actually do!
I’ll keep working hard for it because I have a dream and I’m on a quest to make it happen.

What game do you prefer to play other than cricket?
Basketball. Before joining cricket, I had a dream of becoming a national basketball player but I guess destiny has a different path planned for my future/life.

Being a girl, have you ever faced any trouble in sports?
No, not personally. My parents are quite supportive because they know that I love sports and it’s something that I live for. However, as a girl there are definitely some restrictions. No parent would allow their girls to be out of home so late J

Who is your favorite sportsman and why?
Wasim Akram of Pakistan. He was the first cricketer that inspired me. I loved his bowling “king of swing”!
I’d love to meet him personally.

What is your way of motivating your team?
Well, we are not just a team we are a family, we are always together boosting each other. Before the match you will always find few players under tension attack and that’s totally normal. As a team player it’s my duty to spread the positive vibes among all the players. Early morning in the hotel before going to the match they all meet up in my room and few words of encouragement are all what they need to get them motivated because deep down everyone of us is a heart  eager to win, you can sense our team spirit miles away.

Anything else would you like to share?
The person who I am today is a combined effort of all people who have supported me on my journey.  I’d like to seize this opportunity to thank all who were the reason to my success.
Especial thanks to my parents, friends and loved ones for their support.  And off course a big thanks to Kuwait Cricket for giving me the chance to represent the country that I love. Mr. Asad Baig (Director of Kuwait Cricket), Mr. Mehboob Khan (Director of Kuwait women’s Cricket), Ms. Nida Mirza (Manager), Tariq Shah (Coach), Tahir Khan (Coach), and Ms. Sandra Almeida (Physio) their efforts are countless. Finally a big shouts for my team, “You all are the best”!

I would like to thank KUWAIT UP TO DATE for their magnificent effort in keeping up with all what’s new.  I am a fan of this Page and it was a great honour for me to have them publish my interview on their page.
Thanks once again.

That spirit led to the birth of the all new Mazda6 , 2014 model, powered with the world’s best SKYACTIV engine that has hybrid-like efficiency.
The aspiration of every engineer at Mazda is combined in each car they make.
The story has just begun. Mazda’s romance with engineering will continue, to keep building cars that are worth building and fun to drive.Thank you for sparing your valuable time to be with us today.

Let’s watch more on the story of the Heart Of Mazda.

SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY

The name SKYACTIV has its origins in the term “The SKY is the limit” and it expresses the spirit that is driving Mazda engineers in their development work. They developed SKYACTIV with a belief in unlimited possibilities.

SKYACTIV-G 2.0/ SKYACTIV-G 2.5

High-efficiency SKYACTIV-G direct-injection petrol engines are your passport to a world of driving that is both exciting and eco-friendly, SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engines do more than just set new standards for fuel efficiency and emissions control, they also actively enhance the Zoom-Zoom performance.  To accomplish this, Mazda engineers achieved a technical breakthrough to deliver an extraordinary compression ratio of 13.0:1 while suppressing the knock usually caused by such high compression.   Taken together, the technical breakthroughs in SKYACTIV-G engines realize an astonishing increase in fuel efficiency – up to 15% – as well as more satisfying everyday driving thanks to the ample torque available at low- to mid-engine speeds.

SKYACTIV-BODY

The SKYACTIV-BODY is engineered to achieve two conflicting aims: lighter weight with better safety performance and increased rigidity.  It`s achieved through innovative engineering, and optimized structures and materials.  In total, SKYACTIV-BODY is 30% more rigid, lighter, and able to meet the world`s most demanding crash safety tests, at the same time as giving better handling thanks to its enhanced rigidity.

SKYACTIV-CHASSIS

The SKYACTIV-CHASSIS delivers even more of Mazda`s famous feeling of oneness between car and driver.  Total re-engineering of the basics of suspension and steering systems achieved both lighter weight and superior rigidity.

CELEBRATING PROACTIVE SAFETY

All Mazdas are about the driving experience.  And an important part of the experience is feeling secure in knowing what`s going on around you at all times.  Mazda6 is equipped with a host of features engineered to keep you informed, and to help you anticipate and aboid hazards on the road.  Mazda call this integrated suite of of advanced active safety technologies i-ACTIVSENSE.  i-ACTIVSENSE uses the latest sensing devices to assist your perception and decision-making so you can concentrate on driving.  But no matter how safely or skillfully you drive, accidents can always happen.  So Mazda6 also includes a wide range of passive safety features to protect you and your passengers, including the AKYACTIV-BODY that meets the highest collision-safety standards of the world`s major assessment programmes.

i-ACTIVSENSE

i-ACTIVSENSE is Mazda`s integrated suite of cutting-edge active safety technologies, designed to inform, support and protect.  The Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) system, High Beam Control System (HBC) and Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) keep you informed of what`s going on around you, even in the blind spots to the side and rear.  The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) system support you in split-second decision-making.  Better yet, unlike some other makers` systems which rely on a single sensing system such as a camera, i-ACTIVSENSE uses a smart combination of the latest sensing devices including milliwave radar, near-infrared lasers and cameras to cover the widest range of situations and weather conditions.
