Taxes on the remittances of expatriates
Parliament’s Legislative Committee intends to soon discuss a number of files including imposing taxes on the remittances of expatriates, reports Al-Rai daily. It is worth mentioning that MPs have different viewpoints concerning imposing tax on the remittances of expatriates.
Some MPs have been calling for imposing tax, as it will not have any dangerous consequences but will contribute to about three percent of Kuwait’s income. They said Kuwait has the right to such an advantage, especially since the remitted amount is very high (KD 15 billion per year).
However, other MPs consider such a suggestion as illegal, indicating that the proposal suggests a tax value that is more than the Zakat (2.5 percent) which is collected only once per year while such a tax will be collected on monthly basis in most cases.
They stressed that implementing this proposal will force many of the expatriates to resort to smuggling their money out of the country.
