The temperature exceeded 65 degrees Celsius in some areas
The Washington Post reports a severe heat wave hitting the Gulf states this week. Temperatures have soared to dangerously high levels, creating life-threatening conditions for people. In some areas, humidity has made temperatures feel as if they exceed 65 degrees Celsius.
The newspaper attributes the extremely high temperatures and intense humidity to the world’s warmest waters in the Gulf and human-caused climate change.
In June, record-breaking and dangerous temperatures struck five continents. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirms that June became the hottest month on Earth ever.
Scientists indicate that these heat waves demonstrate how climate change increases the frequency of extremely high and dangerous temperatures.
In Dubai, temperatures reached 45 degrees Celsius (113°F) on Tuesday, with a heat index of 62 degrees Celsius (144°F). Recent extreme temperatures include 61 degrees Celsius (142°F) in Abu Dhabi, 58 degrees Celsius (136°F) at Khasab Air Base in Oman, 52 degrees Celsius (126°F) in both Kuwait and Iraq, and 51 degrees Celsius (124°F) in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia.
