WHO declares new coronavirus pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the rapidly spreading Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) as a global pandemic as the respiratory virus has so far killed over 4,500 and infected over 124,000 worldwide.

“We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by the alarming levels of inaction,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference on Wednesday.”We have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.”

He pointed out that the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China increased 13-fold, and the number of affected countries tripled in the past two week.”In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths, and the number of affected countries climb even higher,” he forecasted.
