Kuwait airport to upgrade security
Kuwait International Airport is planning to upgrade security after British Airways and US aviation authorities reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the arrangements. The government has set up a committee to look into the measures that may be taken to improve security at the airport.
Recommendations to be made by the committee are likely to include installation of advanced inspection devices, tightening of security check procedures and tougher rules against erring employees, reported local newspaper Al Rai.
UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has reportedly expressed concern over the lax procedures and alerted the Kuwaiti authorities that this would result in cancellation of flights from the US and the UK airlines. A few days ago, British Airways denied that it had raised security concerns at the airport.
“We continue to operate to Kuwait as normal. We do not comment on rumour or speculation.”
British Airways was quoted by Arabian Business as saying: “We continue to operate to Kuwait as normal. We do not comment on rumour or speculation.” Concerns over security at the Kuwait Airport come at a time when it is working on the development of a new terminal. Turkey’s Limak Insaat was awarded a $4.34bn contract last month to build the terminal to double the airport’s passenger handling capacity to 13 million, from its current 5.69 million, by 2016.
The deal will see Limak Insaat manage the operational transition process of the terminal following the construction, in addition to providing repair and maintenance services for two years. The construction is being funded by the Government of Kuwait.
