Skills tests of expats in Kuwait
Expat workers in Kuwait would be forced to perform skills tests under new requirements being considered, the acting director general of Public Authority for Manpower, Ahmad Al Mousa, reportedly said. Potential new foreign employees would undergo practical and theoretical exams in either their home country or the Gulf state, he was quoted as saying by Arab Times. The Minister of Social Affairs and Labor would determine which professions would have to take the exams, Al Mousa said. It is likely workers in the construction and domestic industries would be affected.
There are about 2 million expats in Kuwait – accounting for two-thirds of the population. Al Mousa also said a shelter had been established to accommodate up to 500 expats involved in disputes with their employers. They would be allowed to reside there until the dispute is settled, rather than being deported. The conditions of the shelter were not revealed.
